From our pickup in Weiden you head east toward the Waidhaus border crossing — roughly half an hour away, and the classic gateway between Bavaria and Bohemia. Since both countries are in the Schengen area there's normally no stop-and-stamp checkpoint, but it's still an international border: carry your passport (and any spot checks are a non-event when your paperwork's in order).
On the Czech side the road becomes the D5 motorway, which runs past Pilsen — yes, the place the beer is named after, worth a stop for the brewery tour on the way back — and straight into Prague. Rental car, cross-border — done right.
1. Get the trip approved — this is the big one. Under our rental terms, driving the car abroad needs our prior approval. 3. Documents and money. Bring your passport and your driver's license (US license holders: an International Driving Permit alongside is smart). The Czech Republic uses the Czech koruna — cards work almost everywhere in Prague, but a little cash in koruna never hurts for parking machines and small stands.
